What questions about the course do you have that are not answered
by the web site?
-
Why do PC's get viruses and Mac's don't?
-
Great question! We'll try to talk more about this at the relevant
point in the course. For now I'll say there's no fundamental or
intrinsic reason that Macs can't or don't get viruses. It's a
combination of scale and opportunity. Windows, for some reason, is
prone to more security holes. However, more people use Windows than
Mac, so it is easier for viruses to spread.
-
However, I am still not quite sure what the MathLAN is and when we
should use the Open Lab and when we should use the MathLAN.
-
MathLAN is the network of computers found in Noyce. The Open Lab
contains machines that are a part of the MathLAN. Thus, there is a subtle
distinction that makes this like comparing apples and oranges, but
the short answer is, they're "kind of" the same thing.
-
Also, as long as the help is noted, are we allowed to ask the CS
tutors for help?
-
Yes, absolutely. That's what they're there for.
-
Are Labs due Friday mornings as well? I was not too clear on that.
-
No, I will not generally ask you to submit lab write-ups. They're
for your benefit, not mine. The only exceptions will be when things
are explicitly asked for as part of your homework assignment.
-
I guess more on the four page paper would be nice.
-
I'll give more clear directions after the first exam (Week 8).
-
Will the functions and tasks we learn to perform using the Linux
system be easily applicable to the more common Microsoft or Apple
Systems that we widely use on campus?
-
We'll be learning a lot of principles about computing in
general. Very little of it will be application or platform-specific,
so in a way, it's applicable to everything, but in a direct way, not
necessarily applicable to much. If that doesn't make sense or sounds
disappointing, ask me about it.
-
What role will the mentor have in the class? Will they be holding
study sessions?
-
Great question! She will be available in-class during lab
activities. I will inquire about any further availability. However,
you can get additional assistance in the Open Lab (SCI 3815) from CS
Tutors, who work every night but Friday and Saturday.
