Paging: Smaller Tables

CSC 213 - Operating Systems and Parallel Algorithms - Weinman

Answer the following questions. Record your answers in your Reading Journal.
  1. Select one sentence from today's reading that best distinguishes the roles of the OS and the hardware in a multi-level paging system. Briefly (3-5 sentences) explain why you chose that sentence.
  2. Describe an example from your own experience where you have (or might imagine having) traded space for time as in a multi-level paging table (i.e., by introducing hierarchy). Explain how space was saved at the (potential) cost of time.
  3. Write one question that today's reading raises in your mind. You should strive not to ask a question about the reading, unless you're so hopelessly lost you could not even answer the first three journal questions. Rather, you should strive to go one step further and question implications, assumptions, etc.
