The simplification explained "using conditional independence" (p. 574) above Equation (15.8) cannot be made using either relation described in Figure 14.4, but from a more general property called d-separation, which the book does not discuss. Despite that omission, use your own intuition to explain why that specific conditional independence assumption seems reasonable based on the graph structure.
  3. Identify the sentence, section, or concept from today's reading (particularly from among those highlighted by the notes distributed) that remains the most confusing to you. Briefly (3-5 sentences) explain what you find confusing about it.
